What to take for your child’s first swimming lesson?

There is a lot to consider when signing your child up for their first swimming lessons. This is usually a nerve racking big step for many parents and children. The list of things to pack for your child’s first swimming lesson is not always obvious even if you are no stranger to the pool. Therefore, we have put together a list of things we believe will help prepare you for your little ones first swimming lesson. Below we highlight some steps to take beforehand and what to bring to the first session.

Before the first lesson It may be a good idea for you to check with the swimming school what exactly their dress code is for lessons and whether you are required to take anything extra. Some swimming schools have dress codes such as no long shorts or swimming caps to be worn by children with long hair. If you are unsure about what the dress code or what to pack for the first swimming lesson, give the swimming school a call.

Furthermore, it is a good idea for parents and children to familiarize your child with the swimming pool environment and get them comfortable with being around a pool. Family trips to the swimming pool are the perfect way to do this, as well as a fun day out!

The first lesson itself Involving your child in what they need for their swimming lesson, is also a great idea so they know what to expect when they get to the pool. Our checklist below can be used to make sure you have all the essentials.

Checklist for the first swimming lesson Here is a list of things to think of when taking your child for their first swimming lesson.

  • Towels
  • Swimming costume or shorts for the both your child if appropriate
  • Hair clips or hair bands if needed
  • Swimming cap or hat if needed
  • Floats or arm bands if not supplied by the swimming school
  • Goggles but check if they are necessary as some pools will have policies on their use
  • Swim nappies if you are going to an Adult and Child lesson, these nappies are often sold at the swimming school reception and they are widely available at supermarkets.
  • Shampoo or shower gel
  • Water resistant sun screen
  • Locker money/coin if needed necessary
