As children grow up and attend swimming lessons there some important things that they have to learn to do in the water. Below are a few things that all kids should know how to do in the water. Make sure you check so that you are know your child is able to stay safe in the water.

  • Firstly, check that your child is able to get in and out of the pool safely. It is necessary for your child to know how to enter and exit the pool properly and safely. This will give you peace of mind to know that your child is confident and will not need your help as they are able to do it themselves.

  • Treading water is essential and is something that every swimmer needs to know how to do. It is not just for lifesaving purposes, but also for hanging out in the water when it’s too deep to touch the floor and just being comfortable to move around the pool. Once again this will give you and your child the confidence of knowing that they are in control in the water.

  • Turning over onto their back for a back float is essential, especially foryoung swimmers. Back floating is one of the most important skills to learn in the water because if your child is ever in a pool or a body of water alone and they don’t have the strength to swim to safety, they just turn on your back to float and you can ease your way over to them.

  • Finally, as your child gets older and stronger, going under water should be attempted. It is important that your child gets comfortable going under water little by little and holding their breath. As your little swimmer gets better at doing this there will be less chances of swallowed water as it becomes second nature for them. This will take time and as you watch your child gain the confidence to put his or her face in the water, it’ll be time to celebrate how far they’ve come!
